Collecting fountain pens is a fascinating hobby for many people. Some people enjoy collecting most any type of fountain pen. Others prefer vintage or antique pens for their collection. Collecting fountain pens is just like any other hobby and it really doesn’t matter if the item is old or new, expensive or cheap, just so long as the fountain pen appeals to you, the collector.

It is easy to collect brand new pens. You can go into most any retail or stationery store and find a wide variety of impressive looking fountain pens and you will also be likely to find modern designs and colors. If you just enjoy the concept of collecting fountain pens, this is the easiest way to start. It’s fairly inexpensive to rapidly build up a collection of pens that appeal to you.

If you are more interested in antique fountain pens or are looking for a specific vintage brand, then your search is a little more difficult. There are several options you can use to find vintage fountain pens.

1. Go to go to a pen show. This is probably one of the best ways to get a quick education about the hobby. There will be a large number of collectors and dealers were very knowledgeable and who will be happy to talk to you about your hobby. You will also be able to see thousands of vintage fountain pens and select the ones that you would like to add to your collection.

Unfortunately, most of the major fountain pen shows are in big markets like Philadelphia, Boston, New York, and Dallas. One of the first pen shows ever was held in Chicago. However, if you have access to these markets, this is probably the best way to get a quick, hands on, education in pen collecting.

2. Go to estate sales or flea markets. Sometimes you are able to find vintage pens that have been past down from a family member to family member. It’s not unheard of to be able to buy entire boxes of fountain pens for just a few dollars.

3. One of the easiest ways to buy collectible fountain pens is over the Internet. EBay has thousands of auctions going on at any one time with collectible vintage fountain pens from just about every manufacturer known. Of course, you need to be careful when buying collectible antique pens from an online auction.

No matter whether you are just starting out as a pen collector, just thinking about getting into the hobby, or are a seasoned hobbyist, you can get a good idea of the wide variety of vintage fountain pens available from eBay, by choosing from the menu on the left.

How To Safely Buy Vintage Fountain Pens on eBay

Many people are frightened of going onto eBay and buying vintage pens without ever being able to see them first in person. However if you follow some simple rules and are careful about your choices, there are some amazing bargains in vintage pens that you can find on eBay.

The most important thing to try to is to buy the antique pen you’re interested in as unemotionally as you can. As you research the item you want and get caught up in the excitement of bidding it sometimes is very easy to let your emotions take charge and you end up bidding too high on a classic fountain pen.

So, are there specific rules you can follow when buying vintage pens on eBay? Yes, indeed, and if you follow these three simple rules you will increase your chances of coming away from an auction with a real deal.

1. First check the feedback section on the seller whose item you are considering. If at all possible you want to do business with a person who has a history of selling vintage pens. This is not absolutely necessary, but finding someone who has sold antique pens in the past will make you feel better about participating in their auction.

You should pick a feedback rating that you are comfortable with, and used that as a guideline. Many buyers use a 97% to 98% positive rating as their absolute minimum. Other buyers will not do business with anyone less than a 99% rating.

Be aware that the lower you go with the seller’s feedback rating the higher your risk that something may go wrong.

2. Negative feedback comments are important. Read these to get an idea of the problems that other buyers may have experienced. You can probably ignore negative feedback from new buyers. Often what happens is they do not contact the seller to try and resolve an issue before posting negative feedback.

By checking the seller’s feedback you are just looking to see if there is a regular pattern to the negative feedback that would show that the seller is not someone you can trust and safely do business with.

Getting Started in the Hobby of Collecting Vintage Fountain Pens

Starting in the late 1800s, fountain pens became the writing instrument of choice. This is considered to be the golden age for the fountain pen. By World War II however, the fountain pen was generally being replaced by the ballpoint pen.

During this time there were an extraordinary number of styles introduced by various manufacturers. The fountain pen was improved in many ways and there were lots of innovations during this time. It’s no wonder that today many of what we refer to as “vintage” or “antique” fountain pens were created during this period. As well as being functional some of these antique fountain pens are so beautifully crafted that they can also serve as miniature works of art.

Many types and styles of fountain pens are still manufactured to this day and they are still in demand as practical writing instruments. However, vintage fountain pens are normally thought to be those manufactured to prior to 1965. Vintage fountain pen collecting is a past time that many people have fun with. There are an amazing variety of pens available, enough to satisfy the most avid collector.

If collecting vintage fountain pens is a hobby that interests you then you can get started very easily. Throughout the United States there are vintage fountain pen shows held in or close to large cities. If you are fortunate enough to live in an area where you can take advantage of an antique pen show then you will have the chance to look at thousands of vintage fountain pens and talk to other collectors.

You could also just go on eBay and randomly start buying pens that appeal to you. Just like with used cars, however, different pens have varying values depending on the model, manufacturer, and condition. While you would rapidly build up a pen collection this way, some knowledge about what you’re buying is essential.

There are some fountain pen guides which you can use to teach yourself what is a smart decision when buying a vintage fountain pen. If you are truly interested in collecting vintage fountain pens then you may wish to buy several reference books for your own use. However, if you are just getting started and are unsure whether this is something that you really are interested in the chances are very good that your public library has or can get reference books for you.

For new collectors, an excellent book is “Fountain Pens Past & Present”. This was written by Paul Erano and will help you identify and evaluate vintage fountain pens.

This is considered by many vintage fountain pen collectors to be a very comprehensive book about how to collect vintage pens. There are many color photos and also vintage fountain pen ads. It has lots of different and valuable information, and reviews how to find vintage fountain pens and restore them. It also covers the basics for how to value pens. Of course the actual values for specific pens change over time. However this book is a good guide to determining the relative value of different vintage pens. If you are truly interested in collecting antique pens as a hobby, this is an excellent book to add to your collection.

The original brochures published by the pen manufacturers can also be valuable collectibles. If you are more interested in details about the pen then the brochure as a collectible, you can often buy a PDF (electronic) copy which will give you the details of you want without paying the price for an actual collectible.

In general, when competing in an eBay auction, keep in mind that there are other people who want the same pen that you do. They may be willing to pay more than the pen is worth. To avoid this you should always do your research, determine the approximate value for the pen, set your personal limit as to the amount you are willing to pay, and stick to that.

The good news is that there are always new auctions for antique fountain pens starting on eBay. If you lose the competition for one pen, the chances are very good that a pen similar to it will be up for auction again soon. So good luck and keep bidding!

Waterman Fountain Pens

The earliest records of reservoir pens date back to the 10th century, with the earliest surviving examples dating back to the 18th century. However, Waterman’s improvements on basic pen design and aggressive marketing played a vital role in making the fountain pen a mass-market object. The first years of Waterman’s involvement in pens are still rather obscure, though sources are available and research is under way. It is virtually certain that the widely-circulated story that Waterman was inspired to invent a better fountain pen by losing an insurance sale thanks to an ink blot left by a malfunctioning pen is a posthumous fabrication. The essential novelty of Waterman’s first fountain pens was the feed, for which his first pen-related patent was granted in 1884. From the beginning, the competition was brutal — both in the marketplace, and in the courtroom. Despite later company literature that depicts Lewis E. Waterman as a golden-hearted innocent, all evidence indicates that he was a tough, savvy, and innovative businessman

Sheaffer Fountain Pens

Many of Sheaffer’s pen range are characterized by the classic Sheaffer inlaid nib. Sheaffer has developed several different filler systems for their fountain pen, such as the Touchdown Filler (introduced in 1949), and, in 1952, the Snorkel extending filler tube, both of which allow for bottled ink to be used without dismantling the pen.

The company was founded by Walter A. Sheaffer, who designed (in 1907) and patented (in August 1908) a pen filling apparatus that used levers. In 1912, Sheaffer used his life savings to start the Sheaffer company, which started with seven employees and operated in the back of a Fort Madison, IA jewelry store. On January 1, 1913, the W. A. Sheaffer Pen Company was incorporated with an initial investment of $35,000.

Pilot Fountain Pens

The Pilot Pen Corporation was founded in 1918 under the name of the Namiki Manufacturing Company. In 1926 it established overseas offices in Malaysia, Singapore, New York, London and Shanghai. In 1938 the name of the company changed to the Pilot Pen Co., Ltd. It was again renamed in 1950 as the Pilot Ink Company, Ltd. In 1954 The company opened a branch in Brazil. During the years 1972- 1999 various sub companies were formed to cover the various branches. The collective name for these, decided in 2003, is the Pilot Corporation.

Pelikan Fountain Pens

Pelikan is a German manufacturer of fine fountain pens and other writing, office and art equipment, credited with the invention of the differential-piston filling method. Their “true” history began with the model “100″ and the modified 100N (both fountain pens), which sparked the genesis of the company’s distinctive styling.

The modern-day flagship line is known as the “Souverän”, consisting of the M300, M400, M600, M800 and the M1000. Pens with vermeil embellishments, called Toledo, are manufactured in the sizes of (new-style) M600 and M800, and they’re respectively referred to as M700 and M900. Pelikan is notable for manufacturing many of their pens using Cellulose acetate, instead of the more modern plastics used by most other major pen makers.

Parker Fountain Pens

George Parker, the founder, had previously been a sales agent for the John Holland Gold Pen Company. He received his first fountain pen related patent in 1889. In 1894 Parker received a patent on his “Lucky Curve” feed, which was claimed to draw excess ink back into the pen body when the pen was not in use. The Lucky Curve feed was used in various forms until 1928.

From the 1920s to the 1960s, before the development of the ballpoint pen, Parker was either number one or number two in worldwide writing instrument sales.[citation needed] In 1931 Parker created Quink “quick drying ink” which eliminated the need for blotting and led to the development of the most widely used model of fountain pen in history (over $400 million worth of sales in its 30 year history) the Parker 51.[citation needed] Manufacturing facilities were set up over the years in Canada, United Kingdom, Denmark, France, Mexico, USA,India and Argentina. Parker pens were frequently selected (often as favorite pens of the signers) to sign important documents such as the World War II armistices, and commemorative editions were sometimes offered.

Montblanc Fountain Pens

Founded by the stationer Claus-Johannes Voss, the banker Alfred Nehemias and the engineer August Eberstein in 1906, the company began as the Simplo Filler Pen company producing up-market pens in the Schanzen district of Hamburg. Their first model was the Rouge Et Noir in 1909 followed in 1910 by the pen that was later to give the company its new name, the Mont Blanc. The first pen (a fountain pen) known as the Meisterstück or Masterpiece (the name used for export) was produced in 1925. Today the Montblanc brand can be found also on other luxury goods besides pens, for instance there are Montblanc brand watches.

Lamy Fountain Pens

Lamy is a producer of fountain pens in Europe. The company is German-owned and its presence is particularly strong there. Josef Lamy, who was a sales representative for The Parker Pen Company in Germany, founded the business in 1930 by purchasing the Orthos pen manufacturer. Lamy was a pioneer in the use of moulded synthetic plastics to make their product. Lamy is currently run by Josef Lamy’s son, Manfred Lamy.
